AI Based Smart Crosswalk System

Project goals:

Develop a smart crosswalk system that identifies potentially dangerous pedestrian situations and alerts approaching drivers only when a risk is detected.

SYSTEM OVERVIEW:

Two cameras monitor both sides of a crosswalk without traffic lights. An AI service analyzes pedestrian movement and behavior near the crossing. The system identifies risk situations, such as a child running toward the road or a person approaching the crosswalk while looking at a phone. When a situation meets the defined risk criteria, the system activates solar-powered LED warning signs. An admin dashboard displays detections, alerts, and system status.

STUDENT REQUIREMENTS:

Students will define the risk criteria and work as a team to develop and integrate the AI service, backend, dashboard, and warning signs. They should be familiar with JavaScript, Python, React.js, Node.js, REST APIs, and basic MongoDB, and be prepared to learn AI tools independently.

AI Service: Python, YOLOv8, pose estimation, OpenCV, PyTorch
Database: MongoDB
Hardware and Communication: Two cameras, solar-powered LED signs, LoRaWAN
